The Mexico national football team, known as “El Tri,” is overseen by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol.  Chiefly, Mexico has been a member of FIFA since 1929.  Moreover, Mexico is one of the founding members of CONCACAF in 1961.

Mexico has qualified for seventeen World Cups and has done so consecutively since 1994, making it one of only six countries to achieve this feat. Mexico faced France in the inaugural match of the first World Cup on July 13, 1930. For instance, the team’s best performances in World Cups was reaching the quarterfinals in both the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, both of which they hosted. They are set to host the World Cup for the third time in 2026.

Mexico holds the title of the most successful national team in its confederation, boasting 15 official continental titles. Notably, Mexico has won 13 titles in CONCACAF’s top continental competition, which includes 3 CONCACAF Championship titles and 10 CONCACAF Gold Cup titles. Additionally, they have one CONCACAF Nations League title and one CONCACAF Cup.

On a global scale, Mexico is the only national team from CONCACAF and the sole non-European or South American team to have won an official worldwide FIFA competition. In conclusion, Mexico claimed the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999.
